## Appearance
_To be filled in._
---
## Background
Z'ul was born beneath the broken ziggurats of a forgotten Serpari enclave in the southern reaches of Solare, where the sun burns harsh and ancient gods whisper through stone. Unlike others of his kind, he was not raised to revere cold logic and dominion — but curiosity. He lingered among ruins, studied the dead languages etched into cracked pillars, and questioned the rigid doctrine of his people.
This made him other.
Eventually, Z'ul left.
---
## Liora
Far from the coils of his kin, Z'ul found something he had never been taught to value: connection.
Her name was Liora. She was human — warm, defiant, alive in a way that made Z'ul feel something dangerously close to vulnerability. Where others saw a serpent, she saw a soul struggling to become something more. They built a life together on the fringes of civilization — never fully accepted, but together.
And that was enough.
---
## The Wedding Night
It was meant to be the one moment the world allowed them peace.
Instead, it became the moment everything burned.
As vows were spoken, the sky darkened — not with clouds, but with wings and flame. Cultists bearing the mark of a draconic god descended upon the ceremony. Masks of bone. Voices chanting in a language that clawed at the soul. They did not come to kill. They came to take.
Liora was seized — ripped from Z'ul's grasp as he fought, bloodied and outmatched. He remembers her scream. He remembers the smell of ash. He remembers failing.
---
## The Hunt
Z'ul abandoned everything.
For months — perhaps longer — he hunted. It was during this time he met **Arin Veldrak**, a sellsword with too many scars and too few questions. Arin did not trust Z'ul. Z'ul did not care. But Arin knew how to track, and Z'ul had purpose.
Together they followed whispers of the cult — burned villages, missing travelers, rumors of rituals beneath ruined sanctuaries. Each clue led them deeper into something far older and far worse than simple fanaticism.
---
## The Sacrifice
They found the cult too late.
In a cavern beneath shattered stone, illuminated by sickly green flame, the ritual was already underway. Liora stood bound at the center — alive, terrified, and looking for him.
He arrived just in time to see her die. Her blood fed the ritual. Her voice was swallowed by chanting. Her life taken not by chance, but by design.
Z'ul did not scream.
He broke.

## Perserphina's Answer
In the aftermath, kneeling beside what remained of the woman he loved, something answered.
Not vengeance. Not fire.
**Perserphina** — Great Goddess of Solare, patron of hope, love, and protection — did not promise to undo what had been done. She offered something else: the power to speak with the dead, the power to command what lingers beyond life, and the power to ensure no soul is taken without consequence.
Z'ul accepted. Not out of devotion. But because it was the only path left.

## Who Z'ul Is Now
Z'ul walks Solare as something changed — no longer searching for what he lost, but refusing to let others suffer the same fate.
- He speaks softly... except when facing cultists
- He treats the dead with reverence, not fear
- He does not seek resurrection — only justice
- He carries a fragment of Liora with him at all times
- At his side is Arin Veldrak — friend, witness, and the only person who saw Z'ul before and after the breaking

## Personality

|---|---|
|**Ideal**|No soul should be taken unwillingly into darkness.|
|**Bond**|Liora's memory is both anchor and chain.|
|**Flaw**|Z'ul cannot let go — of grief, of vengeance, of the past.|
|**Quirk**|Talks to spirits as if they are still alive.|
---
## Relationships
**Arin Veldrak** — Sellsword. The two met during Z'ul's hunt for the cult. Arin does not share Z'ul's grief but respects his purpose. He is the only living person who knew Z'ul before the breaking, which makes him irreplaceable in ways neither of them would put into words.

## Notes for the DM
- The draconic cult that killed Liora is a standing plot thread — their mark, their god, and their reason for targeting the wedding are all unresolved.
- Perserphina's blessing gives Z'ul a direct divine connection. Given her portfolio of protection and love, her interest in Z'ul's loss is consistent — she opposes the taking of souls and the breaking of bonds by force.
- Z'ul's Serpari heritage and his deliberate rejection of Serpari doctrine places him in an interesting position relative to Sasz, who is also Serpari but came to his own break with his people through a different path.
