### **Fortis, God of Luck and Fortune**
**Lore:**
Fortis was once a mortal gambler, smuggler, and adventurer who lived by his wits and the roll of the dice. Born into poverty in the slums of a great city, he learned early that life was a game of chance—and those who understood the odds could change their fate. He became legendary for his impossible luck, escaping death countless times, winning fortunes in games of chance, and always landing on his feet no matter the circumstances.
It is said that during a particularly dangerous heist to steal from a corrupt noble's vault, Fortis was caught and sentenced to death. On the morning of his execution, a sudden earthquake cracked the prison walls, a merchant's cart crashed into the gallows, and a noble's pardon arrived—all within minutes of each other. [[Perserphina]], amused by his audacity and impressed by how he used his luck to help the downtrodden, elevated him to godhood.
Now, Fortis walks the world as a wandering gambler, appearing at crossroads, gambling halls, and ships at sea. He is neither purely good nor evil—luck favors all equally, but how one uses their fortune defines them. He is beloved by adventurers, sailors, merchants, thieves, and anyone who knows that sometimes fate hangs by a thread.
Fortis teaches that fortune favors the bold, but only fools ignore the risks. He despises cheaters who rig games, believing that true luck must be earned through courage and cleverness, not deceit.
**Divine Domains:** Trickery, Knowledge, Twilight
**Divine Symbols & Sigils:** A silver coin spinning in mid-air, or a pair of dice with stars for dots
**Alignment:** Chaotic Neutral (with Good leanings)
**Appearance:**
Fortis appears as a handsome rogue in his early thirties with tousled dark hair, mischievous green eyes that sparkle with amusement, and a roguish grin. He wears fine but practical traveling clothes—a dark green cloak, leather vest, and boots perfect for a quick escape. At his side hangs a rapier he rarely uses, and around his neck dangles a silver coin on a chain that never stops spinning. His fingers are adorned with rings from a dozen different cultures, each won in a game or taken from a memorable adventure. He often appears in taverns, gambling dens, or at crossroads, offering bets and games to mortals who catch his interest.
**Personality:**
Fortis is charming, witty, and irreverent. He loves a good joke, a dangerous gamble, and a clever trick. He has a soft spot for underdogs and those willing to take risks to change their circumstances. While he appears carefree, he is deeply philosophical about the nature of chance and fate, believing that life's unpredictability is what makes it worth living. He detests those who cheat or manipulate luck through dark magic, seeing it as an insult to the natural flow of fortune.
**Tenets of Faith:**
1. **Fortune favors the bold** – Take risks, seize opportunities, and never let fear stop you from acting.
2. **Respect the game** – Never cheat, rig, or corrupt the natural flow of chance. Luck must be earned.
3. **Use your fortune wisely** – When luck smiles upon you, remember those less fortunate and share your blessings.
4. **Embrace uncertainty** – Life is unpredictable, and that is its greatest gift. Do not fear the unknown.
5. **A bad hand can still win** – Even when the odds are against you, cleverness and courage can turn defeat into victory.
**Divine Goals & Aspirations:**
Fortis seeks to remind mortals that life is full of chance and opportunity, and that fortune can change in an instant. He encourages boldness, cleverness, and adaptability. He opposes those who try to control fate through dark pacts or who rig the game of life in their favor through cruelty and oppression. He watches over gamblers, adventurers, sailors, and anyone who dares to take a chance on something greater.

_These are special powers, a fraction of the god's power upon the mortal world. These powers can bypass immunity and resistances._
**Aura of Fortune.** All creatures of Fortis's choice within 60 feet of him can reroll any attack roll, ability check, or saving throw once per turn, taking the new result.
**Twist of Fate (3/day).** Fortis can force any creature within 120 feet to reroll an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. Fortis chooses whether they must take the new result or keep the original. This ability can be used as a reaction.
**Gambler's Intervention (2/day).** When any creature Fortis can see within 120 feet is about to be hit by an attack, Fortis can cause that attack to automatically miss. Alternatively, he can cause an attack that would miss to automatically hit instead.
**Wheel of Fortune (Recharge 5-6).** Fortis spins his divine coin, causing reality itself to warp with probability. He chooses a 60-foot radius area within 120 feet. All creatures in the area must make a DC 26 Charisma saving throw:
- **Natural 1:** The creature takes 88 (16d10) force damage and is stunned until the end of their next turn.
- **2-9:** The creature takes 44 (8d10) force damage.
- **10-19:** No effect.
- **Natural 20:** The creature regains 50 hit points and gains advantage on all rolls until the end of their next turn.
**Fortune's Reversal (1/day).** Fortis can reverse the fortune of battle. All creatures within a 120-foot radius must make a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw. Those who fail have their current hit points swapped with a random ally or enemy within range (Fortis's choice). Creatures at 0 hit points are unaffected.
---
### **Actions**
**Multiattack.** Fortis makes five attacks with his rapier Chance's Edge or uses Coin Flip.
**Chance's Edge (Rapier).** _Melee Weapon Attack:_ +20 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
_Hit:_ 18 (2d8 + 9) piercing damage, plus 33 (6d10) force damage. On a critical hit, the target must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on all attack rolls and saving throws for 1 minute. Chance's Edge can break _wall of force_, _forcecage_, and spheres such as _resilient sphere_.
**Coin Flip.** _Ranged Spell Attack:_ +18 to hit, range 120 ft., one target.
_Hit:_ Fortis flips his divine coin. Roll 1d20:
- **1-10:** The target takes 55 (10d10) psychic damage.
- **11-19:** The target takes 55 (10d10) force damage and must succeed on a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.

**Attack (Costs 1 Action).** Fortis makes one attack with Chance's Edge or one Coin Flip attack.

### **Mythic Trait: Fortune's Fool**
When Fortis is reduced to 0 hit points for the first time in an encounter, he doesn't die or fall unconscious. Instead, his divine coin spins wildly, and reality shifts. Roll 1d20:
- **1-5:** Fortis regains half his maximum hit points and all his used legendary resistances.
- **6-10:** Fortis regains 100 hit points and can immediately take a full turn.
- **11-15:** Fortis regains full hit points, and all enemies within 120 feet must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of their next turn.
- **16-20:** Fortis regains full hit points, all his abilities recharge, and he gains an extra legendary action per round for the rest of combat.
This trait can only trigger once per long rest.
---
### **Lair Actions**
When fighting in his lair (gambling halls, crossroads, or aboard ships), Fortis can take lair actions. On initiative count 20 (losing ties), Fortis can take one lair action:
**The House Always Wins.** All creatures of Fortis's choice within the lair must reroll their next d20 roll and take the lower result.
**Shuffle the Deck.** Fortis instantly swaps the positions of up to four creatures he can see within 120 feet (no save).
**All or Nothing.** Fortis chooses one creature within 120 feet. That creature must make a DC 26 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, they take 55 (10d10) psychic damage. On a success, they regain 55 hit points.
---
### **Regional Effects**
The region containing Fortis's favored locations (crossroads, gambling dens, port cities) is warped by his divine presence:
- Within 6 miles of where Fortis spends significant time, games of chance become strangely unpredictable—both devastating losses and miraculous wins occur with unusual frequency.
- Creatures who pray to Fortis in his domain have advantage on their next ability check involving chance or luck.
- Once per day, a creature carrying a token of Fortis (a silver coin blessed by him) can call upon his favor to automatically succeed on one saving throw.
If Fortis dies or leaves the region permanently, these effects fade over 1d10 days.
---
### **Tactics**
Fortis is a flashy, unpredictable combatant who thrives on chaos and chance. He never fights the same way twice:
- **Open with Wheel of Fortune** to create immediate chaos on the battlefield
- Use **Twist of Fate** reactively to turn enemy successes into failures
- Rely on **Gambler's Intervention** to protect key allies or doom key enemies
- In melee, strike with **Chance's Edge**, aiming for critical hits to debilitate foes
- Use **Dice of Destiny** for big swings—embracing both good and bad outcomes with equal enthusiasm
- Save **Fortune's Reversal** for dramatic turning points
- His **Mythic Trait** makes him incredibly difficult to kill, as he can bounce back from apparent defeat
Fortis enjoys taunting enemies with quips about their bad luck and congratulating allies on their good fortune. He treats combat like a high-stakes game, always smiling, always calculating the odds.
