## Overview
**[[Perserphina]]'s Chronicle** is a legendary divine artifact created through collaboration between [[Perserphina]] (before her ascension to godhood) and [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]], Goddess of Knowledge. This sacred tome serves as a living record of significant events across Solare, connected directly to [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s divine network of knowledge within the Library of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] in Silver City, Polaria.
The Chronicle is a bound book of approximately 100 pages, its covers crafted from ancient white leather with blue trim matching [[Perserphina]]'s divine aesthetic. The pages appear aged but never deteriorate, and text manifests upon them through divine magic rather than mortal ink.
## History
### Creation
When [[Perserphina]] walked the material plane in the ages before her ascension, she recognized the need to stay informed about significant events across the vast world of Solare. Rather than create her own system of knowledge gathering—which would have infringed upon another deity's divine domain—she approached her half-sister [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] with respect and reverence for the Goddess of Knowledge's divine authority.
Despite being sisters ([[Perserphina]] being the youngest among [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]], Intelliencia, and Wiszilliona), [[Perserphina]] understood that each deity's domain was sacred and inviolable. She could not simply demand access to [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s records; she had to ask as a sister and as a fellow guardian of Solare.
The two half-sisters forged a partnership, creating the Chronicle as a reflection of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s greater work. The artifact would serve as a receiver, echoing the most significant events that [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] recorded in her eternal library. This collaboration honored both deities: [[Perserphina]]'s need for awareness of her world, and [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s supreme dominion over knowledge and record-keeping. It also strengthened the bond between sisters who, despite their different domains, shared a common love for Solare and its people.
### The Guardian Lineage
The Chronicle has been entrusted to a lineage of guardians throughout the ages, mortals chosen for their wisdom, discretion, and devotion. The current guardian is **Benguard** (whose name literally means "Ben-Guard," marking his role as protector of this divine relic).
Benguard acquired the Chronicle from Polaria and, recognizing its immense value and danger, entrusted it to High Priestess Selanna of the Church of [[Perserphina]] in Duskwatch. The artifact remains preserved in magical stasis within the church's sacred vaults, protected by both divine wards and mortal guards.
Both [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] and [[Perserphina]] remain aware of the Chronicle's location and its current guardian, though they allow it to remain in mortal hands for purposes known only to the divine.

## Mechanics and Limitations
### How It Functions
The Chronicle operates as a divine receiver, displaying echoes of what [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] records in her Library. As the Goddess of Knowledge chronicles significant events in Solare, the most important entries manifest within the pages of the Chronicle. The text appears in [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s scholarly, factual writing style—objective, detailed, and without editorial commentary.
### Types of Information Displayed
The Chronicle records two categories of events:
#### 1. Regional Attunement Events
The Chronicle can be attuned to a specific geographic region of Solare. While attuned, it records major **mortal** events occurring within that region.
**Qualifies as "Major Event":**
- Wars, sieges, or major military engagements
- Deaths or coronations of rulers, high priests, or archmages
- Planar breaches, rifts, or significant magical catastrophes
- Major political shifts, treaties, or declarations of war
- Natural disasters affecting large populations
- Founding or destruction of settlements
- Discovery of legendary artifacts or sites of power
**Does NOT Qualify:**
- Day-to-day activities or minor incidents
- Private conversations, personal drama, or individual schemes
- Small-scale crimes or local disputes
- Tactical details or military weaknesses
- Events affecting fewer than 100 people (generally)
- Divine interventions or actions of gods
- Other gods' chosen champions or followers
#### 2. [[Perserphina]]'s Focused Adventuring Groups (Universal)
Regardless of regional attunement, the Chronicle automatically records the significant deeds of a small number (typically 2-4 groups at any given time) of adventuring parties that [[Perserphina]] is personally watching and guiding. This category transcends geographic boundaries.
**Criteria for Tracking:** [[Perserphina]] focuses on adventuring groups actively working against **major threats to Solare itself**. These are continental or world-level dangers that threaten civilization, not local or regional problems.
**Examples of Major Threats to Solare:**
- Continental-scale invasions or wars
- Planar incursions threatening the Material Plane
- Ancient evils or sealed entities being released
- Large-scale corruption of the land or people
- Destruction of major cities or kingdoms
- Threats to the pantheon or divine order
- Apocalyptic magical catastrophes
- Examples: The Devil King invasion, The Spell Engine destroying planar travel
**NOT Considered Major Threats:**
- Local monster problems
- Individual villain schemes (unless world-threatening)
- Personal quests or vendettas
- Regional political conflicts
- Routine adventuring activities
- Dungeon delving for treasure
- Bandit raids or small-scale crime
**Important Limitations:**
- The Chronicle does NOT track all of [[Perserphina]]'s followers or chosen
- Powerful individuals who worship [[Perserphina]] (like Queen Cyrill) are NOT automatically tracked
- Only adventuring groups actively in the field against world-level threats appear
- The focus can shift as threats emerge or are defeated
- It shows what these groups accomplish, not their private conversations or plans
### Reading the Chronicle
**Time Required:** 10 minutes of uninterrupted concentration
**Information Provided:** Events from the previous 48 hours that meet the Chronicle's criteria
**Language:** Automatically appears in a language the reader understands
**Format:** Entries are written in [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s scholarly style—factual, chronological, and objective. They describe what happened, when, where, and the immediate outcome. They do NOT provide:
- Tactical information or strategic weaknesses
- Future predictions or warnings
- Private motivations or thoughts of individuals
- Detailed step-by-step accounts of battles or confrontations
- Locations of hidden artifacts, treasures, or secret bases
**Example Entry:**
> _"On the 22nd day of the month of Jinus, 10,124 A.P., an adventuring company engaged the entity known as the Devil King within the city of Polaria. The confrontation concluded with the Devil King's destruction."_
### Cost and Limitations
**Frequency of Use:**
- First reading per day: No negative effects
- Second reading per day: DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or gain 1 level of exhaustion
- Third+ reading per day: Automatic 1 level of exhaustion, DC 18 Wisdom save or gain an additional level
**Update Delay:** The Chronicle does not provide real-time information. Events appear in the Chronicle after [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] has recorded them in her Library, which typically occurs within 6-12 hours of the event's conclusion.
**Planar Limitation:** The Chronicle only records events on the Material Plane of Solare. Events in the Feywild, Shadowfell, or other planes do not appear unless they directly impact the Material Plane.
**Changing Regional Attunement:**
To change which region the Chronicle monitors:
1. The guardian must travel to a Temple of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] or Temple of [[Perserphina]]
2. Perform a ritual of re-attunement requiring 1d4 days of prayer and meditation
3. Make an offering appropriate to the deity (typically 500-1000 gp in books, scrolls, or knowledge-related items for [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]; items of beauty, art, or cultural significance for [[Perserphina]])
4. The attunement can only be changed once per month
**Current Attunement:** [DM to specify based on Benguard's needs/location]
### Limitations Summary
**The Chronicle CANNOT:**
- Predict future events
- Show real-time or "live" information
- Reveal tactical details, weaknesses, or strategic plans
- Display events outside the Material Plane (unless they breach into it)
- Be used to spy on specific individuals
- Provide information more detailed than [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] herself would record
- Show divine actions, interventions, or the deeds of other gods
- Track champions or followers of other deities
- Track all of [[Perserphina]]'s followers (only 2-4 focused adventuring groups at a time)
- Track or detect [[Anam]] [[Anam|the Withered One]] (he has hidden himself even from the eyes of gods)
- See through the protection of [[Serina’s Staff of the Gods|Serina's Staff]] of the Gods (which blocks divine vision)
- Be read by creatures of Evil alignment
- Function if separated from its attuned guardian for more than 30 days (becomes dormant until returned)
**Critical Exception - [[Anam]] [[Anam|the Withered One]]:** [[Anam]], also known as [[Anam|the Withered One]], has managed to shield himself from divine observation through unknown means. Even [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s all-seeing records in her Library cannot track his movements or actions. Consequently, the Chronicle—being merely an echo of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s work—also cannot detect [[Anam]]. This makes him a blind spot in the Chronicle's otherwise reliable information network.
**Critical Exception - Serina's [[Serina’s Staff of the Gods|Staff of the Gods]]:** The artifact known as Serina's [[Serina’s Staff of the Gods|Staff of the Gods]] possesses the ability to block divine vision and scrying. Any events or individuals protected by this staff's power will not appear in the Chronicle, as [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] herself cannot observe through its protection.
### If It Falls Into Wrong Hands
The Chronicle represents an extraordinary intelligence asset. In the hands of evil individuals or organizations, it could be used to:
- Track the movements and successes of heroic adventuring parties
- Anticipate political shifts and manipulate them for evil purposes
- Identify weaknesses in regional defenses after major disasters
- Learn of divine interventions and plan countermeasures
This is why both goddesses permit it to remain with Benguard—a proven guardian of wisdom and discretion—rather than allowing it to circulate freely or be stored in a more accessible location.
### [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s Awareness
It is important to understand that [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] is aware whenever the Chronicle is read. She knows who reads it, when, and can choose to alter or withhold information if she deems the guardian unworthy. The Chronicle is not a tool to exploit—it is a privilege granted by a goddess to honor both her sacred duty and her bond with her youngest sister, [[Perserphina]].
The sisterly connection between [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] and [[Perserphina]] adds another layer of meaning to the Chronicle. It represents not just divine cooperation, but familial trust. [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] maintains this artifact not out of obligation, but out of love for her sister and respect for the vision [[Perserphina]] had for Solare—a world where knowledge could guide and protect its people.
## Role in Benguard's Story
Benguard's possession and guardianship of [[Perserphina]]'s Chronicle explains several aspects of his character:
**His High Wisdom:** Years of reading [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s scholarly accounts of world events have granted him perspective, pattern recognition, and understanding far beyond normal mortal experience.
**His Knowledge of Other Campaigns:** Through the Chronicle's tracking of [[Perserphina]]'s focused adventuring groups, Benguard has been aware of other parties working against major threats to Solare, such as groups fighting the Devil King invasion and those who destroyed the Spell Engine that disrupted planar travel.
**His Name:** "Ben-Guard" literally identifies him as the guardian of something precious. The Chronicle is that sacred charge.
**His Caution:** Knowing the dangers if the Chronicle were compromised, Benguard entrusted it to High Priestess Selanna rather than carrying it on dangerous adventures. This shows wisdom and selflessness—he values the artifact's safety over personal power.
**His Understanding of Major Threats:** The Chronicle has given him awareness of the scale and nature of world-threatening dangers, allowing him to contextualize local problems within the broader tapestry of Solare's struggles.
## Current Status
The Chronicle currently resides in the Church of [[Perserphina]] in Duskwatch, under the protection of High Priestess Selanna. It is preserved in magical stasis within the church's sacred vaults, protected by:
- Divine wards from [[Perserphina]]
- Magical stasis fields
- Physical security from city guards
- The sanctity of temple grounds
- Selanna's personal vigilance
Benguard can access the Chronicle when needed, but he does so sparingly and with great reverence for the divine gift he has been given.
## Relationship to [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s Full Records
It is crucial to understand that **[[Perserphina]]'s Chronicle is vastly limited compared to [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s actual Book of Records**.
**[[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s Book of Records (in the Library of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]):**
- Records EVERYTHING significant that occurs on Solare
- Includes the actions and interventions of all gods
- Tracks all major figures, regardless of divine allegiance
- Chronicles divine politics and conflicts
- Complete, comprehensive, and all-encompassing
- Accessible only within Silver City
**[[Perserphina]]'s Chronicle (the artifact):**
- Records only MORTAL events and deeds
- NO divine actions or interventions are shown
- NO tracking of other gods' champions or followers
- Only shows [[Perserphina]]'s 2-4 currently focused adventuring groups
- Regional events limited to attuned area only
- A tiny fraction of what [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] actually records
The Chronicle is essentially a filtered echo of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s work—showing only what is relevant to [[Perserphina]]'s specific interests (major mortal threats to Solare and regional mortal events) while excluding the vast majority of information that [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] chronicles, particularly anything involving divine beings or actions.
This limitation was intentional in the artifact's design. [[Perserphina]] needed awareness of mortal struggles and threats, not knowledge of divine machinations. [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]] agreed to share this filtered information while maintaining the sanctity and exclusivity of her complete records.
## Relationship to Other Artifacts
### [[Perserphina]]'s Other Relics
The Chronicle is one of several artifacts left behind by [[Perserphina]] before her ascension:
- **The Cloak of [[Perserphina]]** - Currently worn by Benguard, identified by High Priestess Selanna during [[Perserphina]] Day celebrations
- **[Other artifacts to be determined]**
The Chronicle and the Cloak together mark Benguard as a figure of special significance to the Goddess of Solare herself.
### [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s Sacred Texts
While not technically one of [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s artifacts, the Chronicle represents her divine authority over knowledge and record-keeping. It stands as proof that even [[Perserphina]]—who would become the supreme goddess of Solare—honored [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s domain and sought partnership rather than creating a rival system.
## Tenets for the Guardian
Traditional guidelines passed down through the lineage of Guardians:
1. **Discretion Above All** - Knowledge without wisdom is dangerous. Share what is learned only when it serves the greater good.
2. **Honor the Source** - Remember that every entry in the Chronicle represents [[Knowalia - Goddess of Knowledge|Knowalia]]'s divine labor. Treat the knowledge with reverence.
3. **Protect the Artifact** - The Chronicle must never fall into evil hands. Its safety takes precedence over personal convenience or power.
4. **Use Sparingly** - The Chronicle is not a crutch for lazy investigation. Exhaust mortal means of gathering information first.
5. **Accept Responsibility** - To be Guardian is to bear the weight of knowledge that others do not have. Use this advantage for good, not personal gain.
